2. Annular Eclipse Phase is visible in India on Sun- 21 June, 2020
- Solar Eclipse Surya Grahan India 2020: A solar eclipse, or Surya Grahan, is when the Earth gets engulfed in the shadow the moon casts when it covers the sun, either fully or partially blocking sunlight, and the Earth, sun and moon are in perfect alignment.
- In simple words it is when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, and that point of perfect alignment is when the eclipse occurs.
- The types of solar eclipses are partial and annular eclipses in which only part of the sun is covered, and total solar eclipse when the sun is completely covered by the moon from the centre leaving only the outside rim visible, forming a ring of fire.
- This year, An annular solar eclipse will occur on 21 June, 2020 (31 Jyaishtha, 1942 Saka Era).
- The annular solar eclipse forms a ring of fire but is different from a total solar eclipse.
- An annular eclipse occurs when the moon is on the far part of its elliptical orbit around the Earth.
- From India annular phase will be visible in the morning from some places within a narrow corridor of northern part of the country (parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand) and it will be seen as partial solar eclipse from the rest part of the country.
- In India, the obscuration of the Sun by the Moon at the time of greatest phase of the annular eclipse will be nearly 98.6%.
- Obscuration of the Sun by the Moon at the time of greatest phase of partial eclipse will be around 94% in Delhi, 80% in Guwahati, 78% in Patna, 75% in Silchar, 66% in Kolkata, 62% in Mumbai, 37% in Bangalore, 34% in Chennai, 28% in Port Blair etc.
- The annular path passes through Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Pakistan, northern parts of India and China. The Moon’s penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse, visible in the region covering Africa (except W. and S. parts) S. E. Europe, Asia (except N. and E. Russia) and northern parts of Australia.
- A solar eclipse occurs on a new moon day when the Moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun and when all the three objects are aligned. An annular solar eclipse will occur when the angular diameter of the Moon falls short of that of the Sun so that it cannot cover up the latter completely. As a result a ring of the Sun’s disk remains visible around the Moon.
Note: Eclipsed Sun should not be viewed with the naked eye, even for a very short time. It will cause permanent damage of the eyes leading to blindness even when the moon covers most portion of the Sun. Safe technique to observe the solar eclipse is either by using proper filter like aluminized Mylar, black polymer, welding glass of shade number 14 or by making projection of Sun’s image on a white board by telescope.
3. Tripura CM for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in the State
- Tripura State has planned to provide 100% Functional Household Tap Connection by 2023 under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).
- JJM plans to improve the lives of people by providing safe drinking water to every rural household in the country through functional household tap connections (FHTCs) by 2024.
- Out of 8.01 lakh households in the State, only 7.63% households have been provided with tap connections.
- The State has to accelerate the work of providing piped water supply to every household.
- This will bring an end to the decades of toil and hardships of the women, especially girls.
- The Jal Shakti Minister expressed optimism that expeditious implementation of JJM will ensure that people living in rural areas will get potable water in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality on regular basis in their households on long-term basis and ensuring dignified life of our mothers & sisters.
- Emphasizing on the importance of water sources for long-term sustainability of water supply systems, Union Minister advised for strengthening of existing drinking water sources for long-term sustainability of drinking water supply systems. The planning should be done at village level and Village Action Plan (VAP) of every village is to be prepared by dovetailing all available resources by convergence of different programmes viz. MGNREGS, SBM, 15th Finance Commission Grants to PRIs, CAMPA funds, Local Area Development Funds, etc.
- In 2020-21, Tripura has been allocated ₹ 191 Crore as 15th Finance Commission Grants to PRIs and 50% of this amount is mandatorily to be utilized for water supply & sanitation. Funds provided under Swachh Bharat Mission (G) is to be utilized for grey water treatment and reuse works.
- The letter of Union Minister is well-timed, considering the prevailing CoVid-19 pandemic situation.
- This is a time to instil behavioural changes in the masses to help them practice social distancing as well as expedite the water supply works.
- It is important that people don’t crowd public stand-posts/ public water sources. Therefore, water supply work needs to be taken up in all villages to provide household tap connections, which will help the locals and migrants in getting employment and will boost the rural economy.
- Minister of Jal Shakti assured the CM of Tripura of his full support to make the State a ‘100% FHTCs State’ by 2023
